The 450 yards long ropewalk opened 1767, the northern half being rebuilt, with buttresses, in 1921-2. Hall's Barton Ropery operated on this site until its closure on 23 December 1989. Opening 2000, the southern part of the ropewalk building is a regionally acclaimed arts centre. In 2006 Ropery Hall opened as a live entertainment venue. Illustrated is the double-track mineral railway that extended northwards from the building.
