The 450 yards long ropewalk opened 1767, the northern half being rebuilt, with buttresses, in 1921-2. Hall's Barton Ropery operated on this site until its closure on 23 December 1989. At the southern end of the ropewalk is the former despatch building, rebuilt after a fire in the works in 1806. It bears the inscription 'J H 1807' after its owner, John Hall. When Barton Haven was navigable at this point, coils of rope were loaded onto barges to be transported to Kingston upon Hull. The building has been refurbished and is today occupied by CV Day Spa.
