TL4358 : Wolfson Court, Clarkson RoadTL4358 : Wolfson Court, Clarkson RoadWolfson Court, Clarkson RoadBuilt in the early 1970s as a satellite of Girton College, "though visually low and retiring" according to Pevsner. The architects were David Roberts and Geoffrey Clarke, and the builders Coulson & Son. Brown brick contrasts with the bright orange pantiled roofs, described by Charles McKean in his 1982 architectural guide to Cambridge as "a touch of Saint-Tropez". The plan comprised four courts laid to lawn, with a smaller court near the entrance said to recall a Roman
impluvium, a pond to collect rainwater. Inside, long corridors echoed something of the forbidding character of the 19th-century all-female parent college on the Huntingdon Road.
From 1990 Julian Bland, barry Brown and John Cole (bb+c architects) successively extended the premises with three parallel open-ended ranges, a central law library being flanked by twin residential wings. A nursery was added in 2004. St John’s College acquired the site from Girton in 2018, since when it has been leased short-term for use byvarious college. By the mid-2020s the buildings were considered dated and inefficient. In July 2026 St John's applied for permission to knock down the existing buildings and build new accommodation specifically designed for students, but the City Council has deferred its decision on their future.
