The Grade II listed building LinkExternal link on Roe Street was erected by voluntary contributions in 1813 as a Sunday School. It was founded by John Whitaker, a monument to whom SJ9173 : Memorial to John Whitaker stands in the forecourt. In 1844 a Day School was opened in the same building. These schools continued to function until they were closed in 1973.
