White bluebell, Tyne Riverside
White or albino versions of the Spanish variety of bluebells, introduced 200 years ago, are relatively common, but white forms of the native British type are much rarer, the mutation perhaps appearing at a level of 1 in 10,000 plants. I wasn't quite sure about the two plants I found here because the stem has the erect form of the Spanish immigrant. The woodland has a good colony of the native species but is prone to flooding from the River Tyne which may have introduced bulbs from riverside gardens up-stream.
