SD1497 : Confluence of Linbeck Gill and Black Beck

taken 7 years ago, 3 km from Eskdale Green, Cumbria, England

Confluence of Linbeck Gill and Black Beck
Confluence of Linbeck Gill and Black Beck
Black Beck in the foreground and Linbeck Gill beyond. Linbeck is 'the stream where the Lime trees grow'first recorded in c.1280 as 'Lindebecke'. Adding 'Gill, ravine with stream' to the name distinguished it from the settlement of 'Linbeck' in the valley nearby. It is speculated that this Old Norse and Old English name replaced the original Celtic stream name preserved as 'Devoke' the British 'Black one'. To add to the complexity Black Beck is in the foreground and Linbeck Gill flows out of Devoke Water (Whaley 2006).
