SK3027 : Repton Market Cross
taken 7 years ago, near to Repton, Derbyshire, England
Repton Market Cross
The restored, mediæval market cross in the town centre is said to be at the site where Christianity was first preached in the Midlands (
Link Guide to Derbyshire and the Peak District). The monument consists of a flight of eight steps up to a nineteenth century two-tiered octagonal base which is surmounted by a seventeenth century circular shaft and plain capital with a ball finial at the top. Until the end of the 19th century regular markets took place in the area between the cross and the priory arch.
The cross is a grade I listed building (List entry Number: 1096537
Link Historic England).
