NS3974 : Dumbarton Castle: slot in the Portcullis Arch

taken 9 years ago, near to Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Dumbarton Castle: slot in the Portcullis Arch
Dumbarton Castle: slot in the Portcullis Arch
For the Portcullis Arch itself, in context, see NS3974 : Dumbarton Rock: the Portcullis Arch.

The present view is intended to highlight the slot that accommodated the portcullis itself. The opening that appears at the bottom of the picture is the NNW side of the Arch, that is, the side that faces up the stairs.

The portcullis here was later replaced by a massive gate (now also long gone).

The Rock is a volcanic plug, and it has a long history as a fortified site. For further information, see the Geograph article "Dumbarton Rock and Castle": Link
