Inside Padley Chapel
Inside Padley Chapel
Originally the gate house to Padley Manor, then a barn for 300 years. Now owned by the Catholic Diocese of Hallam. The site has a long history, including Catholic martyrs. Nowadays there are annual pilgrimages each July. It is free to visit between 2 and 4 each Sunday and Wednesday in summer. (Believed correct at 18.5.2017.) Padley Chapel, Grindleford
1588 was not a good time to be a Catholic in England, it being high treason for any priest ordained abroad to be in the Kingdom.
On 12 July Padley Manor, the house of the Recusant Fitzherbert family, was raided and two visiting priests, named Robert Ludlum and Nicholas Garlick, were arrested, along with all the family. The priests were executed in Derby within the fortnight.
An annual pilgrimage in honour of the two martyrs began in the mid 19th century.
The hall is now mostly in ruins, although part of it—probably originally the central gatehouse range—survives, and in 1933 was converted to a chapel, a Grade I listed building.
