Cycle park at Cambridge North station
On its first weekday of operation there are as yet only a few takers for the covered bicycle parking. To the left a vehicle in green and blue livery on citi 2 bus route waits to take passengers into town; the large-radius roundabout in the foreground allows buses serving the station to turn easily. Above the roof, just to the left of the platform towers, can be seen the mast of TL4760 : Chesterton Fen transmitter.

As Nigel Thompson points out TL4760 : Cambridge North railway station, the new station occupies the site of the former Chesterton Junction, where a line to St Ives and beyond once branched off - though ironically there was never a station here while that line was open. This route was used by Great Eastern trains to March via Chatteris and by the Midland trains to Kettering via Huntingdon East. Cut back during the 1950s to a dead-end branch, the remaining service to St Ives was finally withdrawn in 1970.

The Cambridgeshire Guided Busway has taken over the trackbed and formation between here and the outskirts of St Ives, so it is still possible to travel the old route using the frequent buses, or the cycleway and footpath that run alongside. Many of the features of the old railway, such as station buildings converted to new uses, can still be identified, though some of the bridges have had to be rebuilt to accommodate their new purpose.
Cambridgeshire Guided Busway :: TL4555
Funding for the 'Guided Busway' was first applied for in July 2002. Cambridgeshire was awarded 92.5 million. By 2009 the estimated cost was put at 116.27million, in 2010 this estimate had risen to 161.0 million. By the end of 2010 the overall cost of this much delayed project was put at 180+ million.
Early photos taken during the construction phase were first taken in December 2007, it opened on 7 August 2011. See LinkExternal link for the official take on the route and services.
