General election June 2017 - poster
The blue and white sign at the foot of the old oak tree by the road junction > Link is a 2017 general election poster put up by local members of the Conservative Party. A closer view, however, reveals a number of stickers which clearly were added by someone else.
The first slogan shown on the poster was coined six years ago by the then BBC 'News Quiz' presenter Sandi Toksvig in a radio broadcast aired (and sanctioned by the BBC) in early June 2011, reportedly referring to the Tories' child benefit cuts.
The second is new, and first appeared in London on 19 May 2017, in the form of posters pasted all over London. They were the idea of the Turner prize-winning artist Jeremy Deller, who is described as being no stranger to creating provocative works in public settings. The posters, the first edition of which was sold out after only a couple of days, are reported to have been put up and made available for downloading by the 'Flying Leaps' project, which aims to show artists’ work ‘on street poster sites to make unexpected, thought-provoking contributions to the urban spectacle’. Passers-by almost immediately started to take pictures of said posters and began circulating them on social media sites over the following weekend. The idea has since spread, apparently all over the country.
