Trackbed of the Wye Valley Railway, Bigsweir
Two culverts are shown here. The one facing the camera was built in 1827 in conjunction with the adjoining Bigsweir bridge; the stone wall on the right is a culvert constructed by the Wye Valley Railway to carry their trackbed. The line passes through the steel gate above and across the A466 to St Briavels station just a few yards further on. The Wye Valley railway was opened on 1st November 1876 and ran from Tutshill (Chepstow) to Monmouth, a distance of almost 14 miles. The station at St Briavels was known as Bigsweir until 1909, and it closed to both passengers and goods traffic on 5th January 1959. The station building still exists, together with remains of the goods shed and now is the headquarters of a private fishing club.
