Elsecar pumping engine - modern pump and fan house
This rectangular building next to the Newcomen engine houses the switch gear for the out of use submersible pumps, a Scirroco fan (in the green case) and the modern hydraulic power pack (the black tank and grey motor) to work the Newcomen engine.

Normal colliery ventilating fans draw from the shaft but this one blows air down the shaft before men descend to inspect the pumps. This no longer happens as the pumps are silent and the shaft is flooded.

This building is normally closed to the public but we were let in as part of the International Early Engines Conference. I enjoyed treats like this as much as the actual lectures.
