Elsecar Newcomen Engine - 21st century meets 1795
Elsecar Newcomen Engine - 21st century meets 1795
The Elsecar engine is the world's oldest in situ steam engine and has just had a major restoration. It is now moved by a hydraulic power pack at about half speed. This cupboard behind the engine house door conceals the control system. This includes a remote control system operated by a handheld remote.

Access is limited to guided tours with limited numbers under the control of a trained guide. The guide takes the visitors to one floor at a time (there are three) and starts the engine only when he is sure everybody is in a safe position. This enables the engine to be demonstrated with minimal extra guarding and helps retain the atmosphere of this venerable building.
