Robert Tannahill's Cottage
Robert Tannahill's Cottage
The cottage is on the east side of Paisley's Queen Street, opposite the entrance to the Gallowgreen (see Link for the Gallowgreen). "The South Clyde Estuary An Illustrated Architectural Guide" (Frank Arneil Walker, 1986) dates the building to 1755, describing it (as it was in the 1980s, when that book was written) as "a rubble cottage still thatched at the front; preserved because it was the home of the poet Robert Tannahill (17741810)". Since then, the thatching has been removed.

The inscription that is present on the front of the cottage (as of 2017) reads as follows: "The home of Robert Tannahill, from early infancy till his death in 1810. He sang amid the shuttle's din the music of the woods".

The NS4763 : Birthplace of Robert Tannahill, just 90 metres to the north-east of the cottage, is marked by a small cairn with a plaque. Tannahill is also commemorated by a statue (NS4864 : Tannahill) in the town centre and by means of Tannahill's Well (NS4760 : Paisley - Robert Tannahill's Well) in Glennifer Braes Country Park. In the same park is a path that has, in more recent times, been named the Tannahill Walkway (see Link for a selection of pictures of it).

Robert Tannahill was an admirer of Robert Burns; in 1805, he helped to form the Burns Anniversary Society (one of the two earliest Burns Clubs) in Paisley.

Tannahill himself, who had experienced rejection in his personal life, and, more recently, difficulties in getting his work published, committed suicide, drowning himself in a culvert of the Candren Burn (at the Paisley Canal; see NS4763 : Tannahill's Bridge).

His grave in the kirkyard of the West Relief Church (later called Castlehead Church) long went unmarked, but a memorial was finally erected over it, by public subscription, in 1867. See Link for views of the memorial, and Link for views of the church and its kirkyard.
