In 1784 Jane Parminter, daughter of a wealthy wine merchant, set out on the first of several grand tours of Europe accompanied by a sister, a cousin and a friend. Upon completion some ten years later, inspired by the many wonders they had seen, she decided to build a seaside retreat and designed this sixteen sided house. The idea was that in the days before energy utilities was even dreamed of, occupants could gain as much daylight as possible by following the sun on its path from its eastern dawn to its western sunset by moving from room to room.
She then proceeded to stuff the house full of the thousands of mementoes collected on her travels, and subsequently in later life many of the artistic gems made or acquired by her.
At the top of the house is a circular gallery lined with beautiful shell patterns that is really a wonder to behold.
The following pictures, I hope will show you some of this awe-inspiring house.
