10 Downing Street
10 Downing Street
10 Downing Street has been the official residence of the British Prime Minister since 1735, here it is photographed in February 1974. At the time Edward Heath was in the last weeks of his premiership, he narrowly lost the general election on 28 Feb (Con 297 seats, Lab 301) and as it was a hung parliament he attempted to agree a deal with the Liberals led by Jeremy Thorpe, after the failure to come to an agreement he left Downing Street on 4 March with Labour's Harold Wilson becoming premier and returning to Downing Street after an absence of almost four years. It is no longer possible for the general public to access Downing Street due to security reasons.
