NS4759 : Old field boundary

Old field boundary
Old field boundary
The view direction is about the same as in NS4759 : Old gateposts and boundary, but the present picture is from further ahead.

A linear mound, with a ditch on this side (the south-west) of it is clearly visible. The boundary is marked on the first-edition map (surveyed in 1858), although it will not be evident, from a casual inspection, where it is on that map.

The relevant sheet is Renfrew Sheet XII.14 (Abbey). On that map, just above and to the left of the centre of the sheet, is the course of the Knockindon Burn. Adjacent to the burn are two enclosed areas, one with the figure 3662 written in it and the other with the figure 3663. This boundary is the line shown running NW—SE between them.

80 metres directly behind the photographer's position, and lying on the same former boundary, are two NS4759 : Old gateposts. Between there and here the boundary is indistinct, a fact that corresponds with the way the boundary is depicted on the old map sheet just mentioned. The boundary becomes prominent again here.

The boundaries in this area were perhaps associated with the long-gone farmstead of Duchallaw. In the present picture, the location of its low footings is in the clump of trees on the skyline, in front of the pylon on the left. The site is about 600 metres away.

The dark feature on the slope in front of those trees is NS4759 : An old quarry in a field.
