At 21.45 on 31st January, Harwich Harbour Master notified the Harwich Police Station of an exceptional high tide timed for 00.50 the following morning. By 22.30 water was already lapping over Harwich Quay. The town was simultaneously attacked from three sides and by midnight water was pouring in from the east, North and west. LinkExternal link
From Harwich History - "One sad part was that Mr and Mrs Shipley [sic] died. They lived at number seven or six. It was said that Mr Shipley was very ill in bed downstairs, and Mrs Shipley stayed downstairs and held his hand and they died together — very sad. Please accept my apology if this upsets anyone. This is how I remember it." LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
This memorial garden was opened on the 60th anniversary of the disaster. LinkExternal link
