Dunfermline Abbey
Dunfermline Abbey is a Church of Scotland Parish Church. The church occupies the site of the ancient chancel and transepts of a large medieval Benedictine abbey, which was sacked in 1560 during the Scottish Reformation and permitted to fall into disrepair. The nave was spared and was repaired in 1570. It continued to serve as the parish church until the 19th century, and now forms the vestibule of a new church. This edifice, in the Perpendicular style, opened for public worship in 1821, occupying the site of the ancient chancel and transepts, though differing in style and proportions from the original structure.
