Iron kerbs
Iron kerbs
Whilst the roads around the Princes Street bridge are being rebuilt, the chance arises to see the familiar but historic cast iron kerbing in all its glory. These pavement protectors were widespread in the nineteenth century in the city centre and industrial areas. In a time when horse-drawn transport was the mainstay, carts negotiating the cobbles frequently damaged the stone kerbs; hence the foundries made these to reduce damage by heavy wheels.

This type of feature appears to be almost exclusive to Bristol.
