The club was founded in 1952, as the Bristol and Severn Rowing Club, when it was restricted to Bristol Dock Harbour Board employees. It bought its first boat in 1955 and raced at Henley regatta in 1956. By 1983 its traditional membership was in decline and a decision was made to open its doors to the public, adopting the current name. At the same time the club established premises here beside what is now Bristol Marina.
