Males of this common and widespread species, which can be found in a wide range of lowland habitats including brackish or polluted water, have a blue spot on their "tail" and blue eyes. There are at least five known colour forms in the females, with mature females' colour ranging from blue, like the males, to olive green or pale brown. This picture was taken beside Home Dyke on the Wheatfen Broad nature reserve.
