A house has stood next to the ruins of the FitzGerald castle at Camphire since the end of the C17, after the castle was destroyed in 1642. After Beverley Ussher was granted the lands at Camphire in 1667, he and his descendants would go on to build an estate of up to 8,000 acres in West Waterford over the next two hundred years. The C17 mansion that was built next to the castle ruins was replaced in 1843 by the present house. It was designed by the Belfast architect Sir Charles Lanyon who had recently completed The Palm House for the Botanic Gardens in Belfast. The Camphire Estate was purchased by the Dobbs family in 1902, with whom it has remained ever since.
