The main block of Packwood House dates from the 16th century although it has been substantially altered and added to since then. It was owned by the Fetherston family, the last of whom died in 1876 although by that time the house was rented out.In 1905 it was acquired by Alfred Ash, who had made his fortune in the Birmingham metal industry. His son, Graham Baron Ash, set about restoring the house and, although he remained a bachelor, was famous for his lavish entertaining. Ash moved away in 1947, his work on the house complete, and the building and extensive gardens were given to the National Trust.
This wrought-iron gate leads from the topiary garden to the house, and the alcove in the wall to its right is one of several that used to shelter straw bee-hives (aka skeps).
