The 10ft 5in (3.2m) steel sculpture on South Quay was commissioned by West Norfolk Council in 2009. It comprises a rack hung with 176 pieces including oysters, fish, seaweed and a mermaid's bra. 150 blacksmiths congregated on the South Quay and created the fish racks for the sculpture. Visitors were invited to suggest what items should appear on the racks. The explanatory plaque is inscribed ‘The sculpture reminds us of Lynn’s strong links with Norway and the Hanseatic League which dominated North European commerce before 1500. It represents the racks used for centuries for drying fish on the Lofoten Islands north of Bergen. Stock fish was the name given to such dried cod. Even big fish once gutted could be wind dried without salting simply by hanging in pairs on a drying rack as portrayed by the sculpture. The drying process produced a top grade product with high concentrations of protein which was carried to Lynn and Boston in Hanseatic ships by 1300 as German merchants took control of Bergen’s enormous inland, mainly by river, to about 20 English counties.’
