Tewkesbury Abbey
Tewkesbury Abbey
Dating from the 12th century the Abbey Church survived Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries in 1540. In 1471 the abbey had briefly provided sanctuary for the fleeing Lancastrians from the Battle of Tewkesbury. Their refuge proved shortlived as they were released to the custody of the victorious Yorkists and seventeen prominent Lancastrians quickly tried and beheaded in Church Street. Many are buried in the abbey including Edward, Prince of Wales and Edmund Beaufort, Duke of Somerset.
