Giant Venn Diagram on Drypool Bridge
The present Drypool Bridge opened in March 1961. It replaced an earlier, wrought iron swing bridge, also known as Drypool Bridge or Salthouse Lane Bridge which had opened in 1888 but, by the middle of the twentieth century, its carriageway was too narrow to cope with the increased volume of road traffic and it was closed in 1959, prior to demolition.

Following the completion of essential repair work in 2015, there was a need to repaint the whole structure, as part of a plan to refurbish and maintain the bridge and, as part of Hull’s year as “UK City of Culture “in 2017, the bridge was transformed into a giant artwork by artist Sarah Daniels who created a brief inspired by the work of John Venn, the 19th century mathematician and philosopher who was born in Hull's Drypool ward, to reflect the city's links with the internationally-renowned Venn Diagram (LinkExternal link ITV News, East Yorkshire).
