There has been a bridge at this point (close to the North Gate of the city walls) since 1541, prior to which there had been a ferry. The present bridge was constructed as Scherzer rolling lift bridge (or "walking bascule bridge") LinkExternal link in 1927. It is Grade II-listed (List entry Number: 1292933 LinkExternal link Historic England).
