English politician William Wilberforce (1759 1833) was a native of Kingston upon Hull. He is most famous as a leader of the movement to stop the slave trade; a campaign which led to the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 LinkExternal link , which abolished slavery in most of the British Empire.

The statue of William Wilberforce which now stands in the garden of the Wilberforce House Museum was originally placed in the City Hall. It was presented to the town in January 1884, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act, which came into force in 1834.

The statue is Grade II* listed (List entry Number: 1197754 LinkExternal link Historic England). The house behind (now a museum), where Wilberforce was born, is a Grade I listed building (TA1028 : Wilberforce House).
