Gee Cross Well Dressing 2017: Start of the procession

Denton Brass Band at the top of Knott Lane at the start of the procession around the wells. In 2017 there were eight displays at seven locations around the village. Verses from the hymn "Eternal Father Strong To Save" were sung at the blessing of each well. The words of the hymn "O hear us when we cry to thee/ For those in peril on the sea" reflect the theme used for three of the wells which celebrate the work of the RNLI.
Gee Cross Well Dressing
Although well-dressing is a custom mostly confined to Derbyshire, it can be seen in adjacent counties too. Well dressing celebrations were held regularly in Gee Cross from the 1820s until 1878. The custom was revived by the local Women's Institute in 2000.
