Neptune Inn (Custom House Building)
Neptune Inn (Custom House Building)
A view, looking along Parliament Street towards the former Neptune Hotel on Whitefriargate.

The former Neptune Hotel was opened in 1797 by Trinity House, which still owns the five-storey building, and was built to serve merchants landing at the city's first purpose-built dock. The grand, Georgian building was intended to attract the wealthiest members of the then-booming shipping trade. It is very difficult to visualise its grand scale and appearance from within the relatively narrow Whitefriargate especially with the garish shopfronts at ground level (see TA0928 : The Former Neptune Inn, Whitefriargate).

Unfortunately, the Neptune Inn never managed to fulfil its planned role as Hullís leading hotel. Failing to achieve commercial success, it became the Custom house in 1815, a function it served until 1912. For those who care to look above the shop fronts, there are reminders of its past; including the head of Neptune carved above the doorway TA0928 : The Head of Neptune, the Trinity House motto and arms incorporated into a frieze TA0928 : Spes Super Sydera - Neptune Inn Frieze and a blue plaque fixed by Hull City Council TA0928 : Hull Council Blue Plaque, Neptune Inn.

The building is Grade II* listed (List entry Number: 1197675 LinkExternal link Historic England).
