Locomotive, Hythe Pier Railway
Locomotive, Hythe Pier Railway
A locomotive of the Hythe Pier Railway, seen at the Pierhead station. Is this the only railway that equips its locomotives with lifebelts?.

Actually the two locomotives of this line are pretty interesting for other reasons too. They were built in 1917 for use at the World War I mustard gas factory at Avonmouth, and were moved to the pier railway for its opening in 1922. They have run it ever since.

Although it looks a bit like a museum piece or a fairground ride, the railway is used by commuters from Hythe to Southampton, in conjunction with the Hythe Ferry that runs from the Pierhead to Town Quay.
