Packed up and gone
Packed up and gone
The Scotchman has apparently left for home; this little pub has been closed to travellers for some time now.

The name had not changed since the mid-nineteenth century and in fact has nothing to do with Caledonian walkers. The pub is located on the steep St Michael's Hill; goods brought by road came by horse and cart. In order to prevent the cart running downhill at a rate, wooden blocks - called Scotches - were placed under the wheels to chock them. The man who carried a backpack of them was familiarly known as a Scotchman.
