Swaffham Prior War Memorial
Swaffham Prior War Memorial
This Memorial is in the church of St. Mary.
Because of religious disagreements (the sort that cause wars) not all the names appear here. The church warden was also the squire and was determined to honour these men one of whom was his nephew inside the church. He refused to have a memorial on common ground.
Non-conformists were not at all happy that the memorial should be in the Church of England so they refused to subscribe to it and commissioned their own which they installed in the Methodist chapel. Unfortunately they are an untrusting lot and like all Methodist chapels it was firmly locked and there is no photograph.
In all there were 34 men lost in WW1 and nine lost in WW2 although only 23 names appear on the brass plaque
