ST5873 : A last piece of Tyndall's place

A last piece of Tyndall's place
This is Ivy Gate, a last remaining fragment of the former estate of Thomas Tyndall. He acquired the land that was the site of a Civil War fortification and made it a lavish home and garden in 1758. The grounds were later extensively altered by landscaper Humphry Repton, but the University now occupies the area. Sadly, very little of Tyndall's home remains, except for this gate and is Grade II listed.

The truncated spire of the Wills Memorial tower can be seen through the gate in the background.
