Dorchester South station
Dorchester South station
For the convenience of passengers, avoiding the need to cross the footbridge, 'down' trains often use this platform when the timetable permits.

Dorchester South was originally built as a terminus in 1847 with the expectation of continuing through to Exeter. That never happened and the line to Weymouth was subsequently built, curving away to the south of the station and by-passing the platforms.

All stopping trains had to then enter the terminus platforms, pulling into and reversing out or reversing into, depending upon the direction of travel. The 'down' through platform was constructed in 1878 but it was not until 1970 that the 'up' platform was built, thereby ending the need for train reversals that had continued for some 123 years! But even so, it was not until the current station building was built in 1989 that the old station building, isolated from the platforms it served, was finally demolished.
