The owner Thomas Myddleton was a Parliamentary supporter during the Civil War but was unhappy with the decision to behead Charles I and he supported Charles II. In reprisal the east side of the castle was demolished to render it unusable. After the Restoration the family was in favour with the new monarch the east side was rebuilt.
