Trench system remains, Bodelwyddan Castle and Park (2)
On ground south of the castle a system of trenches intended to replicate those found on the Western Front was constructed in 1915 for training recruits from North Wales and the north west of England. The camp was known as Kinmel Camp, it had a capacity of over 20,000 trainee soldiers and included a 890-bed hospital. Thankfully, for entirely fortuitous reasons, the trench system was not returned to farmland and, in consequence, the trench lines are remarkably well preserved.
