Hardknott Castle Roman Fort - The Principia
Hardknott Castle Roman Fort - The Principia
The Principia was the most important building in the fort - for information on it see its sign here NY2101 : Hardknott Castle Roman Fort - Principia signboard. The plan of the building can be clearly made out, with the entrance seen here on the left being at the bottom of the diagram on the signboard. This fort was built early in the second century AD during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (famous for another construction a little way north of here). At the time it was known as Mediobogdum and it was built to guard the strategic Hardknott Pass - it housed a cohort of Roman soldiers (500 men) known now to be the "4th Cohort of Dalmatians" - they must have noticed a bit of a difference to their homeland on the Adriatic ! Behind the fort rises Birker Fell.
