Remains of Flint Castle
Remains of Flint Castle
The south side of the castle viewed from Castle Dyke Street. The north side of the castle faces the River Dee estuary. Construction work on this castle began in 1277, the first of a series of castles built during King Edward I's campaign to conquer Wales. The town of Flint was founded at the same time, as a fortified market town.

During the Civil War, Flint Castle was held by the Royalists. It was captured by the Parliamentarians in 1647 after a three-month siege. To prevent its reuse in the conflict, the castle was dismantled in accordance with Cromwell's destruction order to leave the ruins seen here.

Flint Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Grade I listed.
