The Poultry Cross, Salisbury
The Poultry Cross, Salisbury
This structure, known as “The Poultry Cross” dates from ca1355 and is one of four market crosses which formerly stood in Salisbury; the others being the Cheese Cross, Linen Cross and Bernewell Cross.

Standing at the Junction of Minster and Silver Streets, The Poultry Cross is a hexagonal, open arched shelter with buttressed piers enriched with carved and panelled pinnacles. A central stone shaft with a stone seat round at the base, is carried up through a lead roof. The series of flying buttresses meeting in the centre above the original roof and crowned with a pinnacle and cross were all added in the nineteenth century and show similarities to SU8604 : Chichester Market Cross. The cross was originally surrounded by a square of stone seats which have now been removed and the low wall which once enclosed this cross was removed in 1853. See also SU1429 : Plaque on Salisbury Market Cross.

The cross is a Grade I listed building (List entry Number: 1243148 LinkExternal link Historic England)
