Square-stalked St John's Wort (Hypericum tetrapterum)
This native plant > LinkExternal link can be found growing in damp or wet soils in habitats including meadows, ditches, marshes and the banks of ponds and rivers. The distinguishing feature of this St Johnís Wort is its stout stem with four winged ridges running along its length. Many ancient superstitions regarding this herb have bee documented. Its name 'Hypericum' is derived from the Greek and means 'over an apparition' - a reference to the belief that the herb was so obnoxious to evil spirits that a whiff of it would cause them to fly. It is documented to have been used for treating a number of pulmonary complaints, bladder troubles, dysentery, worms, diarrhoea, hysteria and nervous depression.
