The Linnean name of the species refers to its immensely long proboscis, which must be about as long as the rest of its body. The moth was one of two which were feeding at a big clump of buddleia by the millstream at Bradfield.

I spent about 25 minutes trying to capture a passable shot, without any real success. The job was made all the more difficult because there were territorial red admirals around the buddleia, often driving a hawkmoth off a few seconds after it re-appeared. My photos stand as evidence of the influx of this migratory species in the summer of 2017, but Robin Drayton's recent images are far better than anything I can offer, and shouldn't be missed: LinkExternal link
