Quarry level
Quarry level
Benches on the northwestern side of the South Quarry, which has been the source of all production since 1989. The quarry design has twelve benches or levels reaching to a working depth of 190 metres. Benches are developed only on this side of the quarry, since a severe toppling tendency on the opposite flank has been counteracted by a large internal tip as a buttress against further failure. This particular failure mode has resulted in serious falls throughout the history of quarrying here, and was the reason for closure of the North Quarry.
