Heather and Scot's pines, Brede High Woods
Heather or ling (Calluna vulgaris) grows on the more acid soils in Brede High Woods. It appears, or appears, after trees are felled and, if replanting takes place, is quickly shaded out again. These rotations make the habitats both heath and woodland depending on the phase. In Brede High Woods there has always been some of each.
