The levelled ground converging to above the centre of the photograph was part of the Town Moor Racecourse that staged Newcastle Races between 1721 and 1881.

Here the course is viewed heading towards Grandstand Road, which is named after the racecourse's grandstand that was sited in the vicinity of the junction with Kenton Road - see NZ2366 : Grandstand Road
