Chilton Foliat: the Old Forge
Chilton Foliat: the Old Forge
There are many old cottages in the village, and the Old Forge is fairly typical.

The upper storey may well represent the original condition of the building. The brickwork is laid in Flemish bond, with red stretchers and - here and there - blue or white headers.

The ground floor brickwork has seen a lot of patching-up. At the far end a small doorway has been blocked, while at the near end, discontinuities in the brickwork suggest that a wide opening (about twice the width of the existing window) has been bricked up. Was this once the workshop entrance?

The building to the left (plainly more recent than the forge) is the old village school. Here - in keeping with local tradition - brickwork is used in combination with knapped flint.
