I took the photo simply because I liked the sign - but it happens to show a good sample of typical Wiltshire and west Berkshire brickwork.

The bricks are laid in Flemish bond - 'stretchers' (laid with their long side exposed) alternate with 'headers' (laid end-on). A chequered pattern arises if the stretchers are red while the headers are 'blue'. Blue bricks are generally described either as glazed or vitrified. It may well be that after a couple of centuries the glazed surface fades or is weathered away - leaving the chequering faint or intermittent.
