Chimney, Cloghan Point tank farm near Whitehead (July 2017)
See J4690 : Storage tanks and chimney at the Cloghan Oil Terminal of the Kilroot Power Station (September 2013). The chimney, seen from Quay Lane. as the “Stena Lagan” passes with the 10.30 sailing to Liverpool (Birkenhead). The farm was built, on land reclaimed from Belfast Lough, using stone brought by rail J4498 : Spoil train at Magheramorne from Magheramorne quarry J4498 : Spoil loading bank, Magheramorne (1983).
My (layman’s) understanding is that the chimney is (or possibly was) part of the arrangements for heating heavy fuel oil to make it more viscous.
Media reports (in March 2017) record that the farm and Cloghan jetty J4790 : Cloghan jetty, Belfast Lough were sold to a company with an existing presence in the energy business “The new facility has a jetty which stretches 1,225 metres into Belfast Lough to a point in with a depth of 17 metres water draft. LCC [Lissan Coal Company] plans to invest £15m to enhance the facility, after which it will be the only commercial terminal in Ireland able to facilitate the docking of 120,000 tonne tankers.”
